MİLİTARY TECHNOLOGİES İN OTTOMAN EMPİRE
The Ottoman Empire remained a powerful state for many centuries partly because of its military technologies. The use of gunpowder weapons gave the Ottoman army an important advantage in battles. Cannons, firearms, and siege technologies played a major role in warfare.
Cannons in Ottoman Empire:
Cannons played a very important role in the military power of the Ottoman Empire. With the development of gunpowder technology, the Ottoman army began using large and powerful cannons. These weapons provided a major advantage during wars and sieges.
The main purpose of cannons was to destroy fortress walls and city defenses. In the Middle Ages, cities were protected by strong walls that were very difficult to break. However, the Ottoman army could create large breaches in these walls using powerful artillery.
One of the most famous examples of the use of cannons was during the conquest of Constantinople in 1453. The Ottoman army used large cannons to break the strong Byzantine walls and eventually captured the city.
FİREARMS TECHNOLOGY:
Firearm technology in the Ottoman Empire played an important role in the development of its military power. With the spread of gunpowder weapons, the Ottoman army began to use firearms widely. These weapons allowed soldiers to attack enemies from a distance.
One of the main groups using firearms in the Ottoman army was the Janissaries. They often used matchlock muskets, which were early firearms that used gunpowder, bullets, and a burning match to fire. When the trigger was pulled, the match ignited the gunpowder and fired the bullet.
The use of firearms also changed military strategies. Soldiers were no longer limited to close combat weapons such as swords and bows. Instead, they could fight from a distance using firearms, which gave the Ottoman army an advantage in battles.
